Archaeology and the Pursuit for High-Mountain Gold: Historic Mining in Taos County
Michael Burney, Anthropologist and Author, May 14th , 1:30 – 3:30
Gold mining by Spanish and American interests has been undertaken in Taos County for centuries, most recently between the late 1800s and the first half of the 1900s. Historical research and archaeological excavations undertaken since 2006 yielded information and artifacts from that time period. Despite the ravages of man and nature over the past 100 years, these nonrenewable historical resources—fragments of pottery, china, sun-colored glass, and saw-cut bone — provide another lens through which to view the miner’s life in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at the turn of the 20th century.

Healing Hands, Lenny Foster, Artist and Author, May 21st, 1:30—3:30
My life has been filled with many blessings. One of the blessings I am most cognizant of and thankful for is the gift of sight, both the physical and the imaginative. At this point in my career and life, is to show my gratitude for this gift by honoring and documenting beauty and what I perceive to be the presence of spirit in all that I encounter. The process of creating photographs for me is about communing with the Divine. Through this dialogue, with camera in hand, I’ve had numerous opportunities to transfer onto film my intimate revelations or sublime moments of spiritual insight. The process of creating images for me is joyful and soul-fulfilling which sustains my desire to capture and share wonderful images.

H. Lawrence.  The lecture is co-sponsored with Friends of D. H. Lawrence and will be held at the Taos Center for the Arts.

The Development and Importance of Acequias: Local Lessons that Serve the World, Miguel Santistevan, Executive Director of Agriculture Implementation Research & Education, Mayordomo de Acequia Sur del Rio de Don Fernando de Taos, July 23rd, 1:30 – 4:00(Two Speakers).  This presentation touches on the development of agriculture in the New and Old World with a focus on acequia agriculture and its development in northern New Mexico. Environmental, cultural, and political aspects of acequia survival are examined. Contemporary issues in agriculture, land tenure, and changes in the food system that affect the continuation of acequia culture are also considered.

Acequias and Legal Issues Facing Them, Fred Waltz, Attorney, July 23rd, 1:30 – 4:00 (Two Speakers)
Taos Attorney, Fred Waltz, has handled many legal issues surrounding acequias in Taos County including the Valverde Commons and the Taos Adjudication issue. Waltz has spent 17 years helping craft the Abeyta Water-Rights settlement with Taos Pueblo and establishing water rights for each of the 7,000 participants affected by the settlement. He has represented acequias in federal court regarding their 400 years of history. Acequias encompass many legal issues that impact families for generations and their heirs. Mr. Waltz will provide an overview of the legal issues surrounding acequias encompassing the role and history.

Looking at Death Through Two Cultural Lenses, Anita Rodriguez, Artist and Writer, August 13th, 1:30 – 3:30
Artist and writer Rodriguez takes a thoughtful look at the universal experience of death through the lens of Mexican culture and that of the US. By following the living root of the cult of "Saint Death", or La Santisima Muerte, to its roots in the Aztec world, the talk suggests a nation's, or an individual's, attitude toward death shapes that nation's, or that person's, collective consciousness, humor and love of life. Accompanied by colorful images of shrines, processions, artifacts and her own paintings.

The Acequias in Transition; Will They Survive?, Juan Estevan Arellano, Writer, August 27th, 1:30 – 3:30
Though the acequias have been part of the northern New Mexico landscape for our 400 years, they are facing an uncertain future. Not too long ago, Taos County was known as the bread basket of New Mexico, yet today not much agriculture is going on, especially around the Town of Taos. What role should the town and county governments play in saving this sacred landscape? One thing is certain, we cannot have food security without water security, and we cannot have water.
